Progress

We have recruited almost 30,000 participants to the study. Participants were involved in either one of two stages:

Stage 1

  • Almost 18,000 participants joined COMPARE Stage 1 between February and May 2016 when attending their routine blood donation session.
  • Almost 15,000 participants attended a second donation visit.
  • At the second visit, the different methods for measuring haemoglobin levels were tested, including a non-invasive device and capillary hemocue.  A blood sample was also taken and measured using a “gold standard haematology analyser”.
  • The non-invasive devices and capillary hemocue were only available until the 25th September 2016.

Stage 2

  • Over 11,000 participants joined COMPARE Stage 2 between October 2016 and March 2017 when attending their routine blood donation session.
  • Participants were required to attend one blood donation session and at this visit haemoglobin levels were tested using NHSBT’s routine method and, also, a non-invasive device. A blood sample was also taken and measured using a “gold standard haematology analyser”

The results of the study have now been published here
